Rueben P. Job Institute for Spiritual Formation
Established in 2012, the Rueben P. Job Institute for Spiritual Formation is an initiative for continuing education in spiritual formation of laity and clergy, named after a renowned figure in the field of spiritual formation, Bishop Rueben P. Job.
An alumnus of Garrett, Bishop Job’s ministry pioneered spiritual formation practices within The United Methodist Church. During his lifetime, Bishop Job was at the forefront in spiritual formation, serving as consultant in Christian spirituality, spiritual retreat leader, spiritual guide, and author or co-author of more than 20 books.
The Institute, as well as the Rueben P. Job Endowed Chair in Spiritual Formation, are a lasting legacy to Bishop Job’s lifelong commitment to his field and ensures that Garrett continues to prepare well-formed spiritual leaders for many generations.
Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is the result of the interweaving of three institutions: Garrett Biblical Institute (founded in 1853), The Chicago Training School for City, Home and Foreign Missions (founded in 1934), and Evangelical Theological Seminary (founded in. 1873)
What has remained consistent through the histories of Garrett Biblical Institute, Evangelical Theological Seminary, and the Chicago Training School has been an unwavering, core commitment to the formation of Christian leaders. These institutional histories live on in our core values of critical and creative reason, evangelical commitment, and prophetic participation in society.
Today, Garrett's mission is to form courageous leaders in the way of Jesus to cultivate communities of justice, compassion, and hope - for the thriving of the Church and the healing of the world.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is a private foundation based in Indianapolis. The Endowment was created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly, Sr. and his sons – Eli and J.K. Jr. They support the causes of community development, education and religion, and fund significant programs throughout the United States.
The Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative is a philanthropic program launched by Lilly Endowment Inc. to help theological schools in the United States and Canada better prepare and support pastoral leaders for Christian congregations. Since its inception in 2021, the initiative has funneled over $700 million in funding to accredited institutions to help them adapt to changing ministry contexts and secure long-term financial sustainability.
